Types of Dementia

A clear visual guide to the dementia umbrella—and questions that help families make informed decisions.

Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia, but dementia is not one single disease. Understanding that distinction can help families ask better questions and seek a complete medical evaluation when memory or thinking changes appear.

Why this distinction matters

Memory loss does not automatically mean Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia Australia notes that more than 100 conditions can cause dementia. Classification varies; the chart highlights selected common and less common causes. Some conditions can resemble dementia, and more than one disease process may be present.

A complete medical evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate care, treatment and planning.
